Station at the end of the line
Cascais is the terminus of the Linha de Cascais, so every Lisbon train starts here and reaches Cais do Sodré in 40 minutes off-peak (CP timetable from 6 April 2026).
The walkable old town at the end of the Linha de Cascais: terminus station, fishing bay, museum quarter and a municipal market.
In short. Cascais town centre lies in the parish of Cascais e Estoril, where the median sale price was €5,459/m² in the 12 months to March 2026 (INE, parish level), above the municipal €4,687/m². The historic streets, the marina and the Bairro dos Museus suit buyers who want to walk to the train, the market and the bay, and who accept older buildings and scarce parking in return.
INE median sale price per m², 12 months to March 2026, for the whole parish of Cascais e Estoril, from Monte Estoril to Quinta da Marinha (INE, parish level); INE does not measure the historic centre on its own. Life in Cascais Town Centre
This page covers the old town between the Cidadela, the marina, the fishing beach and the station on Largo da Estação, plus the Bairro dos Museus. Most errands can be done on foot. Birre and Quinta da Marinha, on the western edge of town, have their own guides.

The Bairro dos Museus, the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego and the Cidadela Art District are inside the town, a few streets from the Mercado da Vila.

Where it is
The historic centre sits on the bay at the western end of the Estoril coast, where the A5 and the Marginal end, about 30 km from central Lisbon by road (rome2rio, approx.).
Nearby
Fortifications built between the 15th and 17th centuries; now a presidential summer residence, a Pestana Pousada, a museum and an art district.

Opened in 1999 below the Cidadela; it hosted the 2007 ISAF Sailing World Championships.
Municipal market off Av. D. Pedro I: fresh food Monday to Saturday mornings, farmers' market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Sea cliffs and a collapsed cave on the shoreline just west of town.
Getting around
Cascais station is the terminus, with trains every 15 minutes at peak and every 20 minutes off-peak (CP, from 6 April 2026). Since that date the Caxias–Cascais section has closed at night for modernisation works, with replacement buses (Infraestruturas de Portugal); completion is expected in 2028 (press). The A5 and the Marginal (EN6) both end here. For health care there is the Centro de Saúde de Cascais on Rua Padre Moisés da Silva, Hospital CUF Cascais on Rua Fernão Lopes and the public Hospital de Cascais about 5 km north in Alcabideche.
Schools & family
King's College School Cascais opened in September 2022 and moved into its new campus in September 2025 (age 1 to Year 12 in 2026/27). St George's School (Cambridge, bicurricular, Year 2 to Year 11) and Aprendizes (Portuguese curriculum plus Cambridge IGCSE and A-levels) share Rua dos Depósitos de Água. Prime School in Estoril, IPS in Bicesse and St. Dominic's are a short drive away. Public schools belong to the Agrupamentos de Escolas de Cascais and da Cidadela; places are allocated by home address.
Homes
The historic core is low-rise: 19th- and early-20th-century town houses and small apartment buildings on narrow, partly pedestrianised streets. Around it stand apartment blocks from the 1960s to the 2000s, and gated condominiums start towards Birre. Detached villas on larger plots sit on the fringes towards Quinta da Marinha rather than in the centre.
Before you buy
Parking is scarce in the old streets, so check whether a garage space is registered with the flat. In older buildings, read the condominium minutes and confirm that past alterations were licensed: since 1 January 2024 the usage permit no longer has to be shown at the deed. For short-term letting, the Câmara began drafting an AL regulation on 24 March 2026, with no rules adopted as of September 2026. The contract for the Cascais–Azarujinha promenade rehabilitation was awarded on 24 February 2026 (over €16 million, about 900 days of works, press); no start date has been announced, but the works will affect the waterfront.
